Discovering A Mission
I have been reluctant, some might even say phobic, about professing to a mission in my life and work. It scares me. I have commitment issues. I like change. I like flexibility. I like spontaneity.
How do these things fit with a mission?
Recently, one morning, I sat down and wrote: I want to connect people with their own essence, their own knowing. Whoa, it dawned on me, this sounded like a mission!
I thought about it, then I went a bit further.
I want to know what stands in the way of you connecting with your own essence? Time? Money? Fear?
I am deeply curious about the way we connect with ourselves, maybe even obsessed. I spend a lot of time in self-reflection. Some might say way too much time.
Living as we do, in what many would call a dark age, is there really time for this kind of reflection?
Wouldn’t it be better if I thought about how to improve our world, rather than just obsess about myself? Some would say get out there and take action, make your values known, stand up for all that you know to be good. Yes, but it seems to me, that before I head out to show others how its done, I’d best know exactly who and what I can stand for.
Now, I find myself in quite a predicament. I’d like for this culture, this country to reflect my own values and inclinations. I’d like to stand for honesty and compassion, service, friendship and generosity. Instead, I feel like I work for a giant corporation that cannot govern itself anymore. Unwieldy and out of sync. I can’t seem to focus or make good decisions. Instead, I often feel lost and confused.
Finding A Focus
The only way things come into any kind of focus for me is when I sit still. When I sit very still and listen, here is what I know. What the world needs now, is you, your essence, my essence. This world seems to have forgotten that the very treasure, the very essence of anything lies within us. When I reconnect, mine my own essence, I remember, re-organize around what is important.
There is no downside to connecting with your essence, your own knowing. Knowing your own essence, connecting with your own purpose in this body and this lifetime can only enhance your ability to be truly yourself in this world, to be of service to this world. Ultimately, who will serve the world, if you don’t?.
Serving the World
Sounds lofty, I know, but truly, without serving the world, we cannot serve ourselves, and without serving ourselves, we cannot serve the world. Just a fact, such a paradox. Yin and yang, the foundation of creation, the foundation of evolution, indeed, of all expression is just such a paradox.
We can go inward to serve those around us and move outward to serve ourselves. Or vice versa. When we honor our own rhythms in this way, our own knowing, moving in time with our own inner seasons, our own inner weather, the external weather can be less disturbing.
The external “weather” (including thunderstorms, politics and people) might at times rule our world, yet we can still hold the space open in our hearts for our own “ruler”, for our own choices. This I know. Then everything we do will serve us and our world at the same time.

Thank you for putting words to what I am experiencing. I have made some big changes in my life just recently to clear the space to be able to go within. I have been almost compelled without knowing exactly where I am headed to make these changes. Your blog will give me something to chew on as I tend my gardens.

What a lot to ponder. Thank-you for bringing into focus the crux of the matter, our own essence and perhaps our mission in this world.
